Earlier in the year 1976, the First ever American flag contained 13 red and white stripes and a British Union Jack at the upper left corner. The British Union Jack is the England representation in which there exists representation of three great saints. Saint Andrew, Saint Patrick and the Saint George are the representations used for the arrangement of cross on the flag. The first flag act was passed on the fourteenth of June 1977 was passed by the Continental Congress to establish an official flag after the report which said Betsy Ross has sewed the First American Flag in may 1977. The new flag had alternative red and white stripes and the union is represented in the form of thirteen stars in the white color with blue background.

With the formation of new State, it added to the stars in the American Flag. Several acts have been passed to change the shape and size of the American Flag by the Congress between the years 1777 and 1960. After May of 1975, the number of stripes as well as number of stars has increased in number after the act of January 13 in the year 1974. Later after that due to the act of April 4 of year 1818, President Monroe stated that After July 4^th one star is added with every new state and the flag had thirteen stripes. Ultimately after passing several acts, the American flag today has thirteen Stripes representing the colonies of the United States and the states of the union are represented by the stars. 50 stars are used in the flag for this representation.
